2021 Summer Olympics- 5 Questions

With the Olympics being officially delayed until 2021, there are lots of questions that remain unanswered. Here are my top 5.

1) Will athletes that have already qualified hold on to their qualifications, or will another national championships take place in order to truly have the best field available? For the athlete that has already qualified, the announcement of the delay must feel like a gut punch. For the heads of national governing bodies for sport, it is a massive source of anxiety. They not have to contend with the fact that qualified athletes by get injured, fall past their prime, or be passed by upcoming talent. An answer to the qualifier issue needs to happen immediately.

2) What will happen to other federations championships that traditionally take place in years between Olympics? More than likely they will be rescheduled, however the Olympics moving dates will have a massive ripple effect in multiple local economies because of how it affects other scheduling.

3) Will the Olympics now be Johnny Mnemonic themed?
Bonus points if you know why
I chose this movie

4) What date will the Olympics now take place? From a training standpoint, the when is the biggest question. In order to put together a training plan, you need to have at least a soft target for peak performance. Without a firm date, it's going to be hard to organize your training.

5) Will there be any competitions in 2020? From a fan and athlete standpoint, we need to know what's going on with federation and international competitions in lieu of the Olympics. Will USAC and IFSC put together an impromptu series if the virus dies down and travel is once again permitted? With the great build up that climbing has had leading into the Olympics, it would be a shame to waste it.
